Cousteau’s undersea odyssey, OceanWorld 3D, comes to Blu-ray 3D
Anif/Salzburg, Austria, 27 May 2010 – Sony DADC is authoring and manufacturing Independent
movie distributor Eagle Pictures’ Blu-ray 3D release of OceanWorld 3D. The underwater adventure
movie was the first ocean documentary to be completely filmed and released in 3D. The movie took
over seven years to produce, and twenty-five diving expeditions to complete.
This exciting project comes shortly after Sony DADC was appointed by Sony Pictures
Home Entertainment to handle the disc production of its first Blu-ray 3D release – Cloudy with a
Chance of Meatballs.
In terms of 3D, Sony DADC provides a truly global and integrated authoring network,
which allows the company to share resources and cross-train authoring experts. The value chain
starts with 3D content creation, a field in which Sony DADC is actively participating thanks to the
connection to Sony’s stereoscopic filming knowledge base, enabling Sony DADC not only to create 3D
bonus features for Blu-ray 3D and corporate portraits, but also full length 3D film productions for
the music industry.
The value chain then provides a seamless link to authoring, mastering, replication,
distribution and retail support, resulting in significantly decreased turnaround times for each
project.
Following a long and successful tradition in DVD and BD authoring, a global R&D
team continues to push back the boundaries of BD-Java and BD-Live features for 3D.
Last but not least, 3D customers like Eagle Pictures benefit from the highest quality
assurance possible, supported by in-house test disc replication and quality control.
3D centre of excellence for both Indies and Majors
This spring has seen the company open the doors of a new 3D production centre of excellence
with branches all over Europe. This specialised service enables rights owners to produce the
highest quality 3D Blu-rays whilst also fast-tracking them in order to meet the anticipated demand
for Blu-ray 3D from consumers this summer.
Currently, the 3D production centre of excellence is able to support ten 3D projects
each month, whilst the company already provides the biggest Blu-ray Disc replication capacity in
the industry. Turnaround times for a Blu-ray 3D production - from receiving the assets through to
shipping the finished product - start from as little as three weeks, depending on the complexity of
the production.
"This is tremendous news," commented Dieter Daum, CEO of Sony DADC. "We are probably
the first supply chain provider to secure Blu-ray 3D projects from both the major and independent
sectors. This, we believe, is a reflection of our significant commitment to this ground-breaking
home entertainment technology. We look forward to working closely with the team from Eagle
Pictures."
As of today, all Sony DADC authoring and production sites in the US and EU are fully
3D capable, with Japan to follow soon.
