Successful PLAYSTATION 3 Launch in Europe
 

"Casino Royale": First Bestseller Among Blu-ray Disc™ Titles

Record-Breaking 600,000 PLAYSTATION 3 Units Sold at European Launch

PLAYSTATION 3 was introduced to Europe on March, 23rd 2007. Within the first two days after launch, 600,000 units were sold: 165,000 thereof in the UK, 70,000 in France and 50,000 in Germany. Current sales figures indicate a worldwide sell-through of approximately 3 mio. PLAYSTATION 3 - this is more than the total sales of PLAYSTATION 1 during the first year after its introduction.

In a recent study carried out by Sony Computer Entertainment America, 80% of the questioned PLAYSTATION 3 owners indicated that they are going to buy movies on Blu-ray Disc™. Further 75% said that they are using PS3 primarily to watch high definition movies. Analysts consider the successful PS3 launch to be a key driver for the implementation of Blu-ray Disc™ in the home entertainment market.

"Casino Royale" Blu-ray Disc™: 100.000 Units Sold

The Blu-ray Disc™ launch of Sony Pictures title "Casino Royale" indicates the steady growth of the new format. According to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE), 100,000 units were sold in the U.S. In comparison to that, it took the first DVD title "Air Force One", released in February 1998, eleven months to reach that 100,000 units mark. SPHE President David Bishop mentioned that the "Casino Royale" BD sold more units in just one day than any high definition title ever before. "Casino Royale" is the first Blu-ray Disc™ title to appear in the Amazon Top-Ten DVD Charts.
