SecuROM to enter educational market with market-leading publishers

Educational publishers Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press apply new SecuROM Business Edition copy protection to first products

Salzburg, Austria; April 30, 2005 - Sony DADC's new SecuROM Business Edition has been applied to leading educational titles from Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press. With many years of experience in copy protection, Sony DADC has taken its market-leading SecuROM copy control solution and created the new SecuROM Business Edition to meet the needs of the educational market. Of most interest to educational publishers is SecuROM's option for flexible disc checks. These allow the publisher to specify when and how often disc authentication checks are made. The original disc isn't required to be in the drive every time a copy-protected application is launched.
"The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary is the world's bestselling learner's dictionary. We sell it from worldwide, and we require a protection which simply blends in and lets our products be used with the same ease and convenience as if they were unprotected. SecuROM offers us the protection we need, while being a highly consumer-friendly product with an easy workflow," says Frank Keenan, Publishing Systems Manager of Oxford University Press. SecuROM's simplicity and convenience of handling are furthermore achieved by enabling SecuROM protected software to be used without Windows administrator rights. This feature is especially relevant to office environments. "Copy protection is not a standard yet for educational publishers. They are less security-oriented than games developers, but focus on a very simple workflow and maximum convenience for their customers", says Bernhard Wiesinger, product manager for SecuROM. "The success of having the three market leaders for English Learner's Dictionaries make SecuROM their copy control of choice, proves that we have fully understood what the educational market requires."
Sony DADC's global disc replication capacities of over 1.8 billion discs annually has convinced Andrew Harley, Electronic Development Manager at Cambridge University Press, that he has made the right choice. "We use Sony DADC as our main disc replicator. Our CD-ROMs are produced in several Sony DADC facilities worldwide. As SecuROM allows us to minimise disc checks to only once during installation, purchasers of our bestselling learner's grammar title 'Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary' will not be restricted by having to keep the original disc in the drive all the time, thus maximising customer convenience."
