Sony DADC's ARccOS positions itself as effective digital DVD-Video copy protection for the film
and music industry
Salzburg, Austria, December 2, 2004 - Sony DADC announces the successful protection of the first
Music-DVD. Since the launch of ARccOS, this dynamic and disc-based copy control solution for
DVD-Video has been effectively applied to over two million DVD-Video discs for the film industry.
Ongoing unauthorised copying of DVD-Videos is leading to major losses in revenue for content
publishers in the video and music business. The numbers have meanwhile almost five-folded in Europe
compared to the previous year. Nowadays over 70% of used DVD-R contain movies and music videos.
Experts are expecting the figure to rise as casual copying remains widely accepted. "Experience
with copyright infringement in the CD-Audio business and the trend towards Music-DVD are forcing
the music industry to seriously start considering protective measures for this format," explains
Fritz Deininger, Sales Director for DVD-Video at Sony DADC. "After the film business, labels are
now realizing that now is the time to react before copying of Music-DVDs becomes another
devastating trend." DVD-Video sales are predicted to double in the next three years with Music-DVDs
comprising of over 7% of the total market share. Amongst these markets Germany ranges as the
largest growing market for Music-DVDs with a share of 13%, followed by France (9%) and the United
Kingdom (7%).
ARccOS is a disc-based copy control technology with a dynamic copy protection system that is
compatible with available DVD playing devices and doesn't interfere with the DVDs' performance.
Every single ARccOS guarded title can be equipped with a different code making a generic crack
impossible. The protection is applied to the content after authoring, leaving the input material
unchanged - a method which is successfully being used in the computer games copy protection market.
The technology behind ARccOS prevents 1:1 duplication, ripping, recompression and
unauthorized mass replication of the DVD-Video format, ensuring that the content is safe. The
solution achieves its high protection level by having developers constantly monitor the ripping
software market and ensure that ARccOS remains effective when new products are sold for
circumventing the protection. Extensive testing results document ARccOS's success in preventing of
the commonly-used ripping software products in the market. This dynamic digital copy control
solution can currently only be exclusively obtained at any Sony DADC location world-wide.
Comparable protection packages for DVD-Video aren't available on the market.
