Sony DADC - Product Handling

To make your CD-Rs and CD-RWs last longer, please take a look at the following tips for better care:

Before you buy

If you use either a conventional recorder that runs via your PC or a professional copy station, we recommend that you use normal data CD-Rs or special audio CD-Rs. However, audio CD-Rs are more expensive (for the same level of output quality) because the price includes a copyright fee.

If you use a special CD-R audio recorder, you must also use special audio CD-Rs (Compact Disc Recordable - Digital Audio) because these recorders will not accept data CD-Rs.

Before you record

When you remove the CD-R, CD-RW or DVD-R from its case, avoid getting fingerprints or dust on the disc. If this isn't possible, remove any dust or fingerprints using an anti-static cloth and moving from the inside to the outside edge of the disc.

Labelling

Do not use any sticker or labelling kits, since stickers on Recordables can cause quality problems. However, you should never remove a sticker already attached to a CD-R, CD-RW or DVD-R.

Labelling is possible, using the following techniques:

  • By hand: use only special CD-R markers or water-soluble pens.
  • With CD inkjet printers: the disc must have a liquid-absorbent (inkjet) coating
  • With CD thermal direct printers (e.g. Rimage): the disc must have a corresponding surface coating.
  • With CD thermal supplimation printers: no coating is required for the disc.

For printing colour pictures on the disc, we recommend using a white background.

General Rules

  • Store the CD-R, CD-RW or DVD-R properly (preferably in its original packaging)
  • Never expose discs to direct sunlight.
  • Remember that even small damages to the printed side can lead to errors in the data layer.
